What I do when Users say my Plugin is Not Intuitive

Matt Cromwell

Hi again! 👋🏼

It’s been an interesting week! I’ve got some updates below, but first I want to thank all the folks who replied to last week’s email! Maybe not too surprisingly, they were often very positive about WP Product Talk

Nice articles! Thank you for sending them to me. WePlugins is doing well and I’m not hesitate to say that all credit goes to WP Product Talk. For plugins marketing, As a developer, my mindset was totally different before I started watching WP Product Talks.

Sandeep Kumar Mishra, founder and CEO at WePlugins

And in response to our recent episode about AI in WordPress, Stefan had this to say:

Great show! That was probably the best AI/WP talk I have ever listened to!

As always, I’d love to hear what you think of these emails, so just hit reply and let me know what you think. I read every single reply and answer back as well.

TTV and Customer Feedback

This week’s article is about critical feedback I’m sure we all receive in one form or another: Your plugin isn’t intuitive!

That’s important feedback but it feels so subjective. Over time I’ve asked customers to be more direct with me and help me understand their problem more. And what I’ve found over years of this feedback is that they couldn’t get to success with the plugin without asking for help.

There’s a metric for that which I think all WordPress plugin owners should know about and work on:

Time To Value

Time to value is the time it takes from the moment they install your plugin until they experience the results you promised them. And too often, because of a lack of thoughtful UX, your users might never experience those results and that’s when you get that feedback.

I cite specific examples of when I’ve received that feedback and what we’ve done about that at GiveWP and also KadenceWP.

Hit the reply button if you’ve experienced that feedback and have acted on it with better UX in your plugin – I’d love to hear some great examples.

Last Week on WP Product Talk: Internationalization

In this episode of WP Product Talk, Zack and Katie chatted with Steve Jones from Equalize Digital to cover what it really takes to sell WordPress products internationally: translations, taxes, accessibility, pricing, and more. One big takeaway for me was how much easier global growth becomes when you build with it in mind from the start. You should watch if you’re selling to users outside your country—chances are you’re missing key opportunities or risks without realizing it. This episode will help you spot them.

What have you done to increase sales internationally? Reply and let me know, I’d love to add your feedback to our Show Notes directly!
